Wisconsin’s Wetland Association (WWA) is hosting a 2-day wetland science conference on February 23rd-25th. This year’s conference builds on a two-decade long tradition of regional collaboration to protect the region’s wetlands. This conference is hosted by WWA, a statewide non-profit dedicated to the protection, restoration, and enjoyment of wetlands and associated ecosystems through science-based programs, education, and advocacy. Scientists and professionals of Wisconsin will be sharing wetland research, restoration, and encourage you to share your outreach accomplishments. The 2-day conference will draw upwards of 300 attendees. The discussions will include topics on the latest in science, planning, and protection issues and a look ahead to the future of wetland science and practices in Wisconsin and the Midwest.
There will also be an opportunity to join a field trip to the wetland on February 25th, which will explore Coyote Run. This field trip will examine nearly 200 acres of restored upland habitat along the south branch of the Suamico River. Formerly shrub swamp and sedge meadow, the site was ditched and cleared in the 1930s for agriculture and produced row crops until over a decade ago. The restoration included construction of a settling basin and water treatment upstream from the main wetland basin. These constructed wetlands help buffer the main wetland from the nutrient load coming from the site’s 2,000-acre agricultural watershed.
