Winters are freezing in Wisconsin so when the Madison airport reported a water main line break under its taxiway, the water utility company knew it had to be repaired quickly.
The main break was a 10-inch line that ran diagonally east-west under both taxiways and the main runway. It was installed in 1942, which was the same year operation of the airport was transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps. The Corps expanded the airfield and rebuilt four runways, but the water main line stayed…in the absolute worst location possible.
The break occurred in the direct center of the taxiway so crews immediately shut off the water, but it would need to be repaired and could not be abandoned.
The typical repair of this main line could not be done. There was no way crews could dig up the taxiway to repair. They had to come up with another option. That option would be using the CIPP method to fix the break and strengthen the rest of the main that runs beneath the runway and taxiways. This trenchless pipelining method would extend the life of the water main by upwards of 80 years and create the least amount of disruption possible.
The utility crews encountered several problems throughout the entire project, including groundwater and winter months. Throughout it all, the airport remained open and there were no disruptions to air traffic due to the repairs.
It took 15 months – from initial break to cured resin – to bring the water main back to working order. It’s now stronger and durable than ever before thanks to the CIPP method.
CIPP is a method for restoring older pipe lines with minimal digging in streets and on adjacent property. A piece of durable lining is installed inside the old pipe. It is a safe and environmentally sound solution to replace and repair aging and broken sewer pipes and water main lines. Because the project will not require any digging or excavation, it will be considerably less expensive than traditional pipe replacement which often sees costs totaling millions of dollars.
