For Milwaukee residents, this was a long awaited event. It’s called the annual Doors Open Milwaukee event and this year, the most curious of minds had a chance to peek into the largest wastewater treatment lab in the state of Wisconsin: The Jones Island Water Reclamation Facility. Doors Open is not the only time that the City provides tours, which are an integral element of the community outreach. If you missed the open door event, no worries. There are tours being conducted on Saturdays and visitors have the option of going on a 60-minute in depth tour that includes the Milorganite building, or joining a shorter 30-minute load-and-go tour, both of which will travel via motor coach around the entire Jones Island facility. Visitors will also be given a special treat- a free bag of Milorganite! Since Veolia (the world’s leading provider of environmental solutions and optimized resource management) started operating the Jones Island facility seven years ago, more than 20,000 visitors have toured the wastewater facility from over 22 different countries.
Jones Island Water Reclamation Facility opened in 1926 and is lauded for being one of the first facilities in the world to produce a fertilizer as the by-product of the water reclamation process: Milorganite. Capable of treating more than 300 million gallons a day, the facility is owned and governed by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District and operates around the clock.
